The folk high schools are unique in the Scandinavian cultural tradition. It is a sort of popular university which attaches great importance to holistic education.

Like a small community

A folk high school is like a small community, where students are together 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You study, eat and attend lessons together. Teaching goes on all day, then afterwards you have a choice of leisure pursuits and you can use the many facilities at Diget Folk High School: Workshops, sports facilities, music room and TV/computers.

 

 

Age

You have to be at least 18 years of age to attend a long term course at Diget Folk High School. All ages above 18 are welcome. Courses at Diget Folk High School last between 1 week and 4 months.

Language spoken at the School

As a general rule the spoken language is Danish. Diget Folk High School admits students from East European countries (supported by the Cirius Program) and some lessons will be in English in order to accommodate the students. Please contact the school about lessons, language and demands of your linguistic skills.
Practically all Danes understand and speak English.

 

 

Main subjects

Diget Folk High School offers subjects within:

  • Art
  • Nature and outdoor
  • Language and culture
  • Body and health

In addition to the optional subjects there are obligatory communal activities such as lectures, morning assembly, excursions, Friday Café and meetings.

 

 

Teaching

Diget Folk High School is a non-formal educational institution, recognized and subsidised by the Danish government. There are no exams. For all students it is compulsory to participate actively and with commitment in all teaching and all compulsory communal activities. The teaching at Diget Folk High School is done by dialog in co-operation and on an equal footing between teachers and the students.

 

 

Qualifications 

You will improve your skills within the subjects you choose to study. And you will gain certain social and intercultural skills which are extremely relevant and useful in the internationalized society. A long term course is a very good preparation for higher educational studies as well as for work in international organizations and companies. When completed a course of 16 weeks duration at Diget Folk High School you are given a diploma.

 

 

About Denmark

Denmark is a small constitutional monarchy in Scandinavia with at population of 5,4 million inhabitants. Copenhagen is the capital and is situated on the islands Zealand close to Sweden. Geographically, Denmark is made up of the Jutland peninsula, which borders onto Germany and 406 islands. The language spoken is Danish. Democracy, freedom of religion and expression are assured. The large majority of the population are members of the Protestant church.

 

The city of Skagen is on the very northern tip of Jutland and Diget Folk High School is beautifully situated only 17 kilometres south of Skagen. Skagen is especially known for the light, the air and the white sand. Also art, culture and culinary delicacies are famous.
